Discount Quality Car Care

Terrible Mechanics

Do not take your car or vehicle to Discount Quality Car Care in Spring, TX!  I took my 2002 Audi TT to their mechanic shop on Alana street to diagnose an overheating issue.  I was told they would only need the car for two days max, (and I double checked because I had to leave the country for a while so I needed it back).  I also asked them if they were open on Saturday so I could pick it up.

Needless to say no one was there on Saturday, the work was not done, and when I was finally able to have the car delivered to my location (by a wrecker driver that was rude and careless) Discount Quality Car Care mechanics had gotten grease on the interior of my car that had destroyed the leather on the interior handle.

When I politely called and asked to have the damage repaired, I was not only treated as a liar, I was told “we didn’t touch the car door handle”.  I wonder how Discount Quality Car Care opened and closed the car door then…?

After many lies and destroying parts of the interior of my car, Discount Quality Car Care still failed to diagnose my overheating issue correctly AND charged me over DOUBLE what was originally quoted after taking over 7 times as long to do it as originally quoted (over two weeks rather than 2 days!)

Update 5-28-2012

Discount not only caused all of the above, but I’ve found a turbo boost hose deep underneath the intake that they didn’t tighten and has partially popped off, leaking boost pressure.  Apparently their incompetence has gone a lot further than initially thought…and it was already bad enough!

Update 3-2013

Scambook was kind enough to attempt to contact this horrible car mechanic, but has not received a response.  No surprise there, given their history of lies and failures.  Here’s the discount quality car care scambook report.

How to Find the Most Affordable Car Insurance

Finding car insurance seems like a confusing, time-consuming, costly ordeal, barely more preferable than a root canal. But it does not have to be so painful. It is possible to find affordable, quality car insurance and have it tailored to specific needs by taking just a few simple steps.

First off, simply skipping car insurance altogether is a very bad idea. It may seem like a good money-saving option, but car insurance is legally required in well developed countries. If pulled over or in an accident without car insurance, there are severe legal consequences.

Paying for car insurance is both a necessary and important thing. Insurance rates are highly personalized. They are based on factors such as age, the type of car being insured, the driving record and credit rating of the owner, and the frequency and distance traveled by car each day. College students often qualify for extra-special, below-market insurance rates.

Because insurance rates are specific to the individual, simply asking your colleagues around the water cooler what type of insurance they have is not very useful. One company might give your friend a great rate and give you a terrible one.

What you need to do is get insurance quotes from at least a few different companies. A few quick searches on the internet will take you to sites that allow you to get quotes from different insurance companies. When you visit sites such as these, take your time and read their materials carefully. You might stumble across a piece of advice that helps you a great deal.

Going straight to insurance companies themselves allows you to get a quote easily and quickly. Virtually every quality insurer has an online presence and can generate quotes automatically, or has a toll-free number you can call for a quote. But once again, a particular insurer might be low-cost in general but offer you a high rate. Be absolutely sure you try several insurers before you make a decision.

Once you’ve decided on an insurance company that gives you quality coverage for an affordable rate, saving more money on your payments by increasing the policy’s deductible is one way to lower your monthly premium. A deductible is the amount of money you have to pay in case of an accident. Increasing the deductible is fine -as long as you don’t get into an accident. The high deductible becomes very risky if you don’t have money saved up for an emergency, so be careful about raising your deductible beyond your limits.

Another great way to save money on car insurance is to pay your bill in full, rather than the monthly minimum payment. Most insurance companies offer a discount to people who pay their premiums in one lump sum. If you can afford the initial outlay, this is sure to save money.

Auto Repair: Are You Hurting Your Vehicle?

Article by Abraham Avotina

When it comes to auto repair considerations, more people are hurting the lifespan of their car than probably know it. Perhaps this is an indication of the extraordinary factory warranties that come with some of the newer vehicles. Perhaps it’s just a side effect of drivers knowing less and less about what’s going on under the hood. Whatever the reason, it is causing vehicles that should be lasting years and years to go under in half their natural lifespan. Cars today should be ready to last longer than ever, but in practical applications, they aren’t. Here are some of the reasons yours might not, either.

Ignoring Your Car’s Warnings

Those orange and red lights that show up on the dashboard occasionally aren’t just for decoration. Learn what they mean and what to do when they show up. Sometimes the Check Engine light means nothing more than a loose gas cap. Sometimes it means your engine could disintegrate imminently. You don’t know until you take in to a mechanic who can run a diagnostic check, which is one of the most important aspects of modern auto repair. Don’t assume the light is going to get brighter when it’s really serious. Take it in now.

Giving Your Own Diagnosis

This is a growing problem, especially with the advent of the internet. In the old days, the only people who gave mechanics their amateur diagnosis were those who had plenty of experience with auto repair themselves. Today, anyone can enter some symptoms into a search engine and come back with some results. But these results are often very misleading. When you tell your mechanic that you think the problem is such and such, that’s where they are going to focus their energies. You could even wind up having something replaced that has nothing to do with the actual problem.

Wasting Money

There is a lot of comfort that comes with finding a good mechanic, but if you take the time to learn a few simple auto repair techniques, you can put a lot of money back in your pocket. An oil change can be a hassle without a hydraulic lift, but there are other things you can do that are quite easy. These include replacing the windshield wiper blades, changing out the light bulbs (including the headlights), and switching out the fuses. Even someone with virtually no experience with cars can handle these jobs and they can do it for a lot less money than it will cost at a shop.

Hozelock Auto Reel Versus Regular Hose Reels

When you are looking for the best possible way to store your garden hose, while making it easy to use it everyday, you will soon discover the various options you have – at least in a superficial way. There are wall mounted garden hose reels and garden hose reel carts in every conceivable shape, size and design. You can also get something a bit more sophisticated in the design department – a garden hose storage pot. While not as practical as a hose reel, it does make for a very good looking solution – especially if you don’t have a huge length of water hose to conceal. With every type, there are pros and cons, but one specific hose reel has so many pros, that I have to mention it to you here: The Hozelock Auto Reel.

The Hozelock Auto Reel would be categorized as a retractable garden hose reel, which means that it has a mechanism to aid you in rolling up the hose after you are done working for the day. In other designs, this mechanism is anything from a simple hand operated crank, to an automatic reel driven by water pressure, electricity or a spring. Most of these designs require you to walk back to the reel casing every time you want to reel a part of the hose in. This is fine if you want to reel in the entire water hose because you are done using it, but if you just want to reel it in half-way, then it is a nuisance. The Auto Reel is different. To activate the reeling mechanism, you simply pull the hose lightly where you stand, and a built-in ratcheting mechanism begins to pull on the hose. Then it is simply a matter of “walking” the hose back on the reel. If you don’t want to reel it all the way in, just tug lightly on the hose once again, and the mechanism locks. This really is the most clever way of getting a garden hose back on its reel, that I have ever seen.

Let us compare what other solutions offer – just to put things in perspective.

Flexibility
Other hose reels are either wall mounted or portable – not both. The Hozelock Auto Reel can be wall mounted, or it can be carried around using the integrated handle.

Cleverness in design
Most other types of retractable hose reel have a reeling mechanism which requires you to walk back to the reel itself to activate it. The Auto Reel lets you reel in from the business end of the water hose, so to speak.

Compact size
Other reels are compact too – but only when there is no hose on them. The Auto Reel really packs a lot of hose (up to 20 meters) into as tight a coil as you can get it. No more huge loops of hose hanging on the wall.

The Hozelock Auto Reel comes in two sizes – the 2490 Auto Reel and the 2485 Mini Auto Reel. The 2490 comes with 20 meters of high quality hose already on the reel, plus fittings and accessories. All in all, it is a good deal.

Is there anything bad to say about this product? Well – not bad per se. If I had to point something out, it would be that the little pull to activate the reeling mechanism may take a few tries to get right. Then, when you’ve got it down, it becomes second nature. Of course, if you don’t like the look, which is typical for Hozelock products, with its green plastic, then that would be a problem. Overall though, it is difficult to say anything bad about this incredibly clever hose reel. Very recommended.

Transmission Repair Is Not for Amateurs

Article by Andrea Avery

Jenna had heard many horror stories about some of the local transmission repair shops.

“They are only in it for the money,” said one person.

“They completely messed up my car,” said another.

It seemed as if all of these conversations came back to her at one time, the very moment she began having transmission repair issues. Because of all of the things she had been told, she built up distrust for all of the automotive shops in her area. This wasn’t a big deal as long as her car wasn’t given her any problems. However, she was now faced with a tough dilemma. If she didn’t trust any of the professionals, how in the world was she going to get her vehicle fixed?

“Oh, I know this guy who does transmission repair work from his backyard,” said her friend Lucy.

“Does he do a good job?” asked Jenna.

“I’m not so sure,” said Lucy. “I just know that he’s a cutie.”

Jenna felt a little reluctant at first. However, knowing that the guy was attractive made her lean more in his favor.

“Cool, does he charge a lot?”

“Jenna, you are asking me all of these questions and I don’t know the answers offhand,” said Lucy. “How about we go over and stop by his place tomorrow?”

So, they did just that. Anyone who saw them get dressed for the occasion would probably think they were both preparing for a nice dinner date. They had on a full face of makeup with some of their best outfits.

“How does my hair look,” asked Jenna.

“It looks gorgeous,” said Lucy. “What about mine?”

“Yours looks good as well,” said Jenna.

With that, they headed off to go meet up with the attractive mechanic.

When they arrived at his place, Jenna was a little unimpressed with his so-called working station. However, all of her reservations subsided when she saw him.

“May I help you ladies,” he asked.

“Yea, yes, my name is Jenna and I need some transmission work done,” she said. “My friend Lucy here said you do a good job.”

The man looked at both of them and smiled, realizing he was about to make some easy money.

“Well, you have come to the right place,” he said. “Let me take a look at your vehicle.”

After assessing the issue, the man gave them a price. It was half the price of what it would have cost at a professional place.

Nearly a week went by and the man was finally finished. So, they went back over to pick the car up. On the way home, Jenna was so excited. She had finally found a cute, cheap mechanic. As she turned the corner onto her street, her car suddenly stopped. She put her head down in shame as she realized she had been duped.
